On-Going Protests By The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Civil Society Organisations

18 mai 2009
Trade Union Congress of Nigeria - TUC -

On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), we salute Nigerian workers and indeed all Nigerians for the support to the legitimate protests/mass rallies organized by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other civil society organizations. The rallies so far held in Lagos on Wednesday May 13, 2009 and Asaba on Friday May 15 2009 are meant to deepen democracy and enhance good governance.

Specifically, the protest was to pressurize the Federal government to :

- Discontinue its proposed deregulation of the downstream sector of the oil industry ;

- Establish a Tripartite Negotiating Mechanism for a new National Minimum Wage, and ;

- Full implementation of the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform Committee Report.

We are indeed appreciative of the massive turnout for the rallies particularly in Lagos. We commend Governor Fashola of Lagos State for his commitment to good governance demonstrated by the peaceful atmosphere provided for this legitimate protest. We are grateful to the Governor for his goodwill message and count on his intervention for peaceful resolution of the issues at stake.

Meanwhile, arising from the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held on Sunday May 17, 2009, the remaining rallies have been rescheduled to hold in June. The comprehensive timetable would be released soonest by the National Secretariat of Congress.

The hope is that government would take advantage of this period to take necessary measures that would facilitate peaceful resolution of the demands of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the benefit of all Nigerians.

Again we thank Nigerians for their support and solidarity and urge for continuous support and cooperation to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil societies in the patriotic struggle to promote democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

The struggle continues !

Abdulwahed Omar, President NLC
