Police brutality continues as Zimbabwe prepares for elections |
24 January 2008 Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) - http://www.actsa.org/ The streets of Harare yesterday became, once again, a scene of Police brutality in Zimbabwe’s Capital- armed Police were seen beating up and throwing tear gas at scores of supporters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) as they walked to a rally in the City’s Glamis Stadium. The MDC had planned a march to protest at the state of the economy, high levels of unemployment and to call for a new constitution, only to have their request declined by the Police. A magistrate upheld the Police ruling, but gave permission to the Party to hold a rally at the Glamis Stadium in the west of the City. Tony Dykes, Director of Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) commented: "This is just the latest in a long line of human rights violations orchestrated by the Zimbabwe Police against anyone who opposes Robert Mugabe’s Government. If the proposed elections are to be in any way free and fair then the Police cannot continue to be used as the repressive instrument of a political party." ACTSA today launched a campaign calling on the European Union renew their targeted measures on the leaders of Mugabe’s Government next month, when they become due for review. Dykes added, "These targeted measures are vital to send a clear message to Mugabe that Europe will not support him and his ministers personally whilst they continue to oppress the people of Zimbabwe." |
